Jakarta experienced clean air only 34 days a year

Ministry of Environment and Forestry recorded the air quality at the GBK area.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Greenpeace Indonesia stated that Jakarta capital city had good air quality for only 34 days in a year. Unhealthy air condition was recorded on 196 days, and moderate air quality on the remaining days.

“Data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry recorded the air quality at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium area,” the campaign person of environmental organization Greenpeace Indonesia Bondan Ariyanu stated in Jakarta on Tuesday.

However, the data aligns with Greenpeace Indonesia’s analysis result in 2017 when “green day” or pollution-free air condition was recorded on 29 days, while moderate air quality was reported on the other 238 days.

“During that year, the air was polluted for 92 days,” Ariyanu added.

In 2018, the number of days recorded as having unhealthy air quality doubled, reaching 247 days, with very unhealthy air condition on 177 days. Hence, Greenpeace Indonesia has urged the Jakarta administration to give emphasis and attention to the problem of air pollution and give a responsive reaction to tackle it.
